Steve Burns

More about Steve

Steve Burns’s international experience started at a young age. Born in Germany, he spent his youth living in countries including Japan, Philippines, and Washington DC before his family settled in Northern California. After graduating from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Steve worked with agriculture associations and then in public service before beginning his career in the wine business in 1990 as the International Marketing Manager at the California Wine Institute. In 1996, Steve joined the Washington State Wine Commission, serving as Executive Director until 2004. During his tenure in the Pacific Northwest, he started the first Wine Tourism Taskforce in the U.S., which resulted in unprecedented cooperation between the state’s two largest industries, a relationship that continues today. In 2004, Steve returned to California to establish O’Donnell Lane, LLC – a marketing, public relations, and strategic planning firm that specializes in association and non-profit re-alignment as well as board development and management.

A native Californian, Katie Canfield earned her B.A. in Spanish and Global Studies at University of California, Santa Barbara. During her final year at university, she studied abroad in Santiago, Chile, where her career in the wine industry began. In 2009, Katie moved to Logroño, Spain and then Dijon, France, where she earned her M.Sc. degree in Wine Business. Following her studies, she moved to the UK to join Manchester-based wine retailer Hangingditch Wine Merchants, also contributing articles regularly to leading trade publication Harpers Wine and Spirit. Since her move back to California in 2014, Katie has worked in marketing and communications for the international portfolios of Wilson Daniels, Paul Hobbs Wines, and now O’Donnell Lane LLC, where she drives communications and strategic planning. Katie has worked three grape harvests in Chile, France, and Napa Valley, and holds the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wine and Spirits.

Born in Los Angeles, California but raised in rural Washington State (Walla Walla), Josh Heiser has lived and worked across the USA (Seattle, Los Angeles, New York and Miami) and in Milan, Italy. From a construction industry family and with a naturally creative mind and keen eye for detail, Josh has been designing projects and installations for most of his life, furthering his technical finesse. While he is well versed at stagecraft, visual merchandising, interior design, and landscaping and construction, Josh specializes in event creation, design, and coordination. Josh is the Co-Founder and Partner of O’Donnell Lane, LLC since 2004, where he spearheads all design-related aspects of events, the web, and marketing materials for the firm’s international clients.

Our brand management and marketing experience ranges from mass-market wines to luxury brands from around the world such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leflaive (France), Royal Tokaji (Hungary) and Schramsberg Vineyards (Napa Valley). We’ve successfully assisted with the launch of new domestic and international brands here in the USA, including planning and executing a highly innovative media tour to launch St. Michelle Wine Estate’s luxury brand Col Solare (Washington State). Recently, we launched two brands for UK supplier Broadland Wineries in the US – Waipapa Bay Wines (New Zealand) and a vegan-friendly wine Proudly Vegan Wines (Chile). Other work has included re-positioning existing brands, where in the case of Cadaretta Wines (Washington State) and Clay House (Paso Robles), we detailed the new brand plans right down to the redesign of the tasting rooms.
